Monkey Shoulder Smokey is the peated expression of the popular Scotch blended malt whisky from Monkey Shoulder, distinguished by a pronounced yet balanced note of smoke. The whisky is bottled at 40% ABV.

The brand is owned by William Grant & Sons. Originally, Monkey Shoulder was a blend of whiskies from the Balvenie, Glenfiddich and Kininvie distilleries, with all its components coming from the Speyside region. It is a blended malt whisky, containing no grain whisky. In the Smokey variant, the smoke comes from whisky made with barley malt dried over Highland peat, which sets this profile apart from the intensely medicinal, iodine-like expressions from Islay.

Smokey Monkey matures in first-fill ex-bourbon casks and is bottled at 40% ABV. According to Master Blender Brian Kinsman, it retains the gentle vanilla along with the spicy and citrus accents of the original blend, overlaid with a dry smokiness perceptible on the nose and palate. Despite its peated character, this is no peat monster – the smoke is present throughout, but blends harmoniously with the rest.

According to the official tasting notes, the nose offers oaky smoke, gentle vanilla and subtle citrus, while the palate brings dry peat with creamy sweetness and spice. Other notes point to honey, orange peel, wood smoke and toasted oak, developing over time towards vanilla and citrus accents, with a medium structure and a dry, smoky-sooty character.

The producer intended this as a whisky made for mixing. This expression retains the qualities that make Monkey Shoulder so useful in cocktails and long drinks, adding soft, peaty accents to them.
