Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve is a blended Scotch whisky from Scotland, built around a honeyed, sweet profile and bottled at 40% ABV. It was introduced in its current form in 2012 as a no-age-statement expression, replacing the earlier eighteen-year-old Gold Label. It should not be confused with the previously available and now discontinued eighteen-year-old Gold Label Centenary Blend – the current incarnation of Gold Label carries no age statement, and Diageo designates this edition as a Master Blender's Reserve.

It is a blend combining malt and grain whiskies. The packaging materials list Clynelish as a single malt present in the blend, and in many descriptions it is precisely this malt core that accounts for the honeyed sweetness of the whole. The whisky is composed of Speyside and Highland malts, while the light, smoky finish nods to west coast distillates.

In the glass it shows a golden, amber hue. Notes of honey and amber, medium legs; on the nose oak, malt, a touch of salted caramel and a hint of toasted corn; the palate is sweet but flat. Other tasting notes speak of a soft, floral nose – it opens with delicate, floral aromas of wildflowers and warm honey, with richer notes of baked peach and a faint accent of seaweed in the background. The texture is sometimes described as silky, though lighter than one might expect: a silky palate, lighter than anticipated, with flavours of honeydew melon and satsuma orange supported by caramel and vanilla, with a touch of oaky bitterness.

The profile closes with a gentle, sweet-smoky finish. The finish is soft and sweet, with light smoke and woody spice. According to an independent review, the palate first floods with plenty of caramel, followed by dry leather and a malty note, with the whole ending on a delicate waft of light smoke. Wine Enthusiast awarded this whisky 92 points.

Gold Label Reserve occupies the middle ground in the Johnnie Walker range. It sits between the everyday Red and Black Label and the ultra-premium Blue Label – more premium in presentation and taste than Red or Black, yet considerably more accessible than Blue Label. This is a whisky with a profile built on smoothness, honeyed sweetness and gentle smoke.
