Johnnie Walker Double Black is a Blended Scotch whisky from the Diageo portfolio, in which the signature Johnnie Walker smoke has been amplified relative to the classic Black Label. The set includes a 0.7 litre bottle of Double Black along with two 50 ml miniatures: Aged 18 Years and Gold Label Reserve. All three whiskies are bottled at 40% ABV.

Double Black was created on the basis of the Black Label recipe. It went on general sale in 2011 after an earlier debut in travel retail, and was created by taking Black Label as a starting point, adding more peated malt whiskies and maturing them in heavily charred old oak casks. The blend shows a strong influence of powerful, peaty malts from the West Coast and Islay, and the intensity is immediately noticeable in the form of smoke and spice. The profile reveals notes of clove, smoke, raisins and apple, while tones of orange and vanilla lead to a bold, sweet-smoky finish. A more detailed sensory description indicates that the palate is full and complex, with peat smoke cutting through rich raisins and sultanas; apples, pears and orange peel bring freshness, while creamy vanilla and spices add gentleness, and the long, warming finish combines spicy oak tannins with lingering smoke.

The Gold Label Reserve miniature is a whisky in a rounded, honeyed style, built around a specific malt core. It is a blended Scotch created by Jim Beveridge, composed of malt and grain whiskies from Speyside, Islay, the Highlands and the Lowlands, with the Clynelish single malt at the heart of the blend. It is rich and honeyed, with layers of caramel, vanilla and tropical fruit, balanced by a delicate note of smoke. The aroma offers sweeter notes of honey and caramel with a touch of fresh banana, the colour has a golden sheen, the palate shows vibrant tropical fruit and smooth, creamy vanilla, and the finish is lingering and sweet-smoky.

Aged 18 Years is the oldest age statement in the brand's core range. This blend brings together up to 18 different whiskies, each of which has spent a minimum of 18 years in cask, including malts from Speyside, Glen Elgin and Cardhu as well as Highland Blair Athol. This expression carries plenty of creamy vanilla, lively fruit and running honey, alongside soft wisps of smoke. On the palate the texture initially seems a little thin, yet remains smooth and silky; the flavours are balanced, with orange marmalade bringing fruity sweetness accompanied by dark fruit and peach, a distinct malty note and subtle, earthy, slightly ashy smoke.

The set makes it possible to compare three different directions of Johnnie Walker blending: the smoky and spicy character of Double Black, the honeyed, fruity gentleness of Gold Label Reserve and the mature, malty-fruity balance of Aged 18 Years. Double Black pairs well with grilled dishes and food with a hint of smoke, for example grilled lamb or steak, as well as mature cheeses such as cheddar or gouda.
