Château de Reignac

A Bordeaux Supérieur from Entre-Deux-Mers that regularly outperforms classified crus in blind tastings.

The estate lies at the confluence of the Dordogne and the Garonne, and its unique feature is the combination, within a single property, of the finest terroir types found on both banks of Bordeaux: deep gravels at the top of the hill – the very same deposits that make up the great terroirs of the Médoc and Pessac-Léognan – a clay slope, and the marls and hard limestone of Castillon.

The château was built in the 16th century by Baude de Peyron; among the surviving later additions is an orangery designed by Gustave Eiffel. Since 1990 the estate has been run by Yves and Stéphanie Vatelot, with Michel Rolland as consulting oenologist. The result: Grand Vin de Reignac 2001 took second place in a blind tasting held by the Grand Jury Européen alongside the most celebrated wines of Bordeaux, while the 2004 vintage won a tasting in Hong Kong. The range also includes Balthus – a one hundred per cent Merlot from old vines, fermented in new barrels using Vatelot's patented method – and the white Reignac, from a three-hectare parcel planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris vines. The estate holds HVE certification.
