Benromach

Benromach

A single malt distillery in Forres, Speyside, built in 1898. In 1993 it was bought by the family-owned firm Gordon & MacPhail, which began a restoration aimed at reviving a forgotten Speyside style: rich, hand-crafted whisky with a gentle hint of smoke.

Until the 1960s, malt in the region was dried over peat-fired kilns, so even the lightest Speyside whiskies had a subtly smoky character; over time, as modern methods appeared, most distilleries moved away from this style. Benromach, brought back into production in 1998, remains faithful to the old Speyside style. The whisky is made from Scottish barley and spring water from the nearby Romach Hills, and matures on site at the distillery.
