Sierra Tropical Chilli is a tequila-based liqueur produced in Mexico by the family-run distillery Destilerías Sierra Unidas in Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco. It is built on Sierra Tequila Blanco and bottled at a moderate strength of 18%. It is worth noting that despite the strength given in the trade name, the producer's sources clearly indicate an alcohol content of 18%.
The distillery stands behind a tequila-making tradition passed down from generation to generation. The spirit is created at Destilerías Sierra Unidas in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and today the art of tequila production has been entrusted to Rodolfo González; the base of every Sierra tequila is the Mexican agave tequilana Weber variedad azul, also known as blue agave. The Tropical Chilli variant itself was created as part of the brand's liqueur line. The launch of Sierra Tropical Chilli was announced during an event attended by brand ambassador Jessica Lopez and Mario Kappes, education manager at Borco, who is credited with creating the new variant.
The profile of this spirit is based on a combination of tropical fruit and chilli. Sierra Tropical Chilli has an intense, fruity flavour of exotic mango and passion fruit, with a hint of chilli lending a spicy character; combined with Sierra Tequila Blanco, it delivers a harmonious profile uniting fruity and spicy elements, and the recipe contains exclusively high-quality ingredients and 100% natural aromas along with mango and passion fruit concentrate, with no artificial flavourings. The spirit is coloured with caramel.
On the nose and palate, tropical fruit dominates, broken up by a gentle heat. The nose offers fruity notes of pineapple, mango and other tropical fruits, accompanied by an intense yet pleasant chilli warmth; the taste is sweet and fruity, with a tropical freshness that then merges with the spicy heat of chilli, while the finish remains delicately sharp and long.
The way it is served underlines the fruity-spicy character of the spirit. The liqueur combines the fruitiness of Sierra Blanco with a tropical note – the intense flavour of mango and passion fruit with a touch of chilli – and can be served neat or on the rocks. It works well in exotic cocktails such as Tequila Sunrise or Tropical Margarita, and also as an accompaniment to Mexican cuisine – tacos, guacamole or spicy salsas – where it complements their piquant notes.
