Evan Williams Kentucky Straight Bourbon is the flagship bourbon of Kentucky's Heaven Hill distillery, bottled in this version at 40% ABV. The brand takes its name from Evan Williams, who in 1783 opened one of the first commercial distilleries in Kentucky on the banks of the Ohio River, although the modern brand itself was introduced by Heaven Hill in 1957.
Behind the production stands Heaven Hill – the largest independent, family-owned distillery in the United States, run since 1935 by the Shapira family. EW Black is made from Heaven Hill's standard mash bill: 78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley. All Evan Williams bourbons mature in American oak barrels with a level three char. The label carries no age statement, but as a bourbon designated straight without an age declaration it must be aged for at least four years; that is more than the two-year minimum required for the "straight" designation, yet at the same time the minimum requirement for a straight whiskey without age information on the label.
Classic bourbon notes lead the aromatic profile. The nose offers sweet corn, vanilla, caramel and a delicate oak backbone, with a subtle note of spiced bread and a touch of green apple or citrus peel, while the palate brings classic tones of caramel, vanilla and light brown sugar. The texture is light to medium, with a slightly dry finish, and the finish itself is short to medium, with lingering vanilla and gentle spice.
This is a versatile bourbon when it comes to serving. It pairs with grilled burgers, pulled pork, fried chicken, honey-glazed ham or pecan pie.
