Beluga Noble is a Russian super-premium vodka from the Mariinsk distillery in Siberia, distinguished by its use of malt spirit as a base. Beluga Noble Russian Vodka was created in 2002 by the Mariinsk distillery, with the first 38 bottles coming off the production line on 13 December of that year. The plant is located in the heart of Siberia, 300 km from the nearest town, and draws water from nearby artesian wells 300 metres deep. The bottle is crowned with the distinctive image of a fish – the beluga sturgeon, from which the brand takes its name.
What sets Beluga Noble apart from most premium vodkas is the raw material. The majority of vodkas are made from grain spirit, potato spirit or neutral grain spirit, filtered to the near-complete neutrality required by the category's definition, whereas Beluga Noble is based on barley malt spirit – the same base that gives rise to Scotch whisky and which carries the aromatic compounds of malted grain rather than the neutrality of industrial spirit. The malt spirit is prepared at the Itkul distillery (founded in 1868), located in the ecologically pristine region of the Altai Republic, and is produced not from a blend of grains like typical spirit, but from malted wheat.
The production process combines filtration with a resting period. Carefully selected natural ingredients pass through a triple filtration system, after which Beluga Noble is left to "rest" for thirty days, which helps to neutralise the sharp odour of the spirit and bring out the vodka's soft flavour. The spirit additionally passes twice through a 10.5-metre-high birch charcoal filtration column impregnated with silver. Besides malt spirit and artesian water, the vodka also contains ingredients such as honey, oat extract and milk thistle extract (Silybum marianum).
The sensory profile is dominated by softness and a gentle sweetness. The nose reveals subtle aromas of citrus peel, white pepper and notes of honey and vanilla; the vodka is silky and creamy, with a light sweetness on the palate, further notes of porridge oats, honey and a touch of vanilla, while the malted barley lends it a full, rounded texture, and the finish is clean and crisp with a lingering note of white pepper. At 40% ABV, Beluga works well chilled and neat as well as a cocktail base. The producer suggests that the vodka tastes best in the company of caviar.
It is worth noting a change concerning its provenance. In October 2022 Noblewood acquired all rights to the brand for 75 million dollars, excluding Russia, and since then the raw spirit has been sourced from Noblewood's own distillery in Latvia, with the vodka rectified and bottled in Montenegro. The product is offered as a set with a glass, in a 0.7-litre bottle.
