Aberlour 12 Year Old Double Cask Matured is a classic Speyside Single Malt, showcasing the balance between fruity freshness and sherry depth so characteristic of this distillery. Bottled at 40% ABV and presented in a set with glasses, it makes an excellent entry point into the world of whiskies matured with the involvement of sherry casks.

The Aberlour distillery was founded in 1879 by James Fleming, at the confluence of the rivers Lour and Spey in the heart of Strathspey. Aberlour whisky is made exclusively from Scottish barley, malted for around seven days and dried over an unpeated kiln, with distillation carried out twice in copper pot stills. This twelve-year-old bottling is one of the pillars of the brand's portfolio.

The essence of this whisky is the double maturation referenced by the name "Double Cask". The spirit matures in a combination of American oak ex-bourbon casks and sherry casks. The whisky rests in American barrels previously used for ageing bourbon as well as in European Oloroso sherry casks; the latter impart subtle yet sweet notes of dried fruit, caramel, plums and cherries, adding a further layer of complexity. It is a textbook example of how the crisp, citrusy character of a young distillate is softened by double maturation.

The aroma and palate are dominated by the harmony of both cask types. The double maturation brings rich depth and balance to the crisp, citrusy core, with layers of honeyed fruit and sweet spice; the whisky is soft and rounded, with fruity notes of red apple, a sherried character and aromas balanced by rich chocolate, while the finish remains warm, long, sweet and spicy. The whole remains approachable, yet complex enough to invite further exploration.
