The Macallan Double Cask 18 Years Old is a single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, matured for 18 years exclusively in sherry-seasoned American and European oak casks. Every cask selected for this edition spent the entire, almost two-decade-long maturation period solely in sherry-seasoned oak casks.
The distillery has been operating continuously since 1824, and Double Cask 18 belongs to the Double Cask collection. First introduced in 2016, the Double Cask collection sits between the Sherry Oak Collection and the Colour Collection. At the heart of the style lies the marriage of two types of oak. Each expression within the Double Cask collection is balanced by European and American oak, seasoned with sherry in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. Oloroso sherry was used to season both the American and European oak casks, with the former contributing notes of vanilla and the latter bringing the spiciness so characteristic of Macallan.
The contribution of each type of oak is clearly discernible here. Sherry-seasoned American oak adds gentle vanilla to the subtle spiciness of European oak, resulting in a whisky with a sweeter, warmer flavour and character. Macallan emphasises the whisky's natural colour. It is the oak that makes the greatest contribution to the quality, natural colour and the distinctive aromas and flavours of this single malt.
The aroma is led by dried fruits, ginger and toffee. Macallan 18 shows pronounced dried fruits, ginger and toffee on the nose, with ripe orange and hints of clove and nutmeg. On the palate a deeper structure unfolds. Raisins and sultanas with notes of caramel, vanilla and ginger, balanced by woody spice and citrus sharpness. The finish brings warm oak spice with ginger, moving into sweet orange. Bottled at 43%.
