Teaninich 8 Year Old "Daring Rye" is a single grain Scotch whisky from the Highland distillery Teaninich in Alness, released as part of the Diageo Special Releases 2025 "Horizons Unbound" collection. This is an experimental rye whisky – the only non-single malt representative in the series.

Teaninich distillery, founded in 1817, today has an annual production capacity of 10.2 million litres and distils for brands such as Haig Dimple, VAT 69 and Johnnie Walker. It stands out for combining historic craftsmanship with modern technology – it is one of the few Scottish distilleries that use a mash filter instead of a mash tun. This solution, more commonly found in brewing, made an unusual experiment with the raw material possible.

Daring Rye is the distillery's first rye-based single grain whisky – a 2016 experiment using an unconventional mash bill of malted rye and barley. Combined with the distillery's signature mash filter and ex-bourbon casks, this grain yielded a distinctly different profile. After distillation, the spirit matured for 8 years in American oak ex-bourbon casks, and was bottled at natural cask strength, without chill filtration and with no added colouring.

In the aroma and on the palate, the experimental character reveals itself from the very first nosing. The nose opens with popcorn toffee and wafer caramel, joined by vanilla cream, rye spiciness and hints of clove and dill. On the palate, the creamy sweetness of toffee is balanced by rye bread spice, nutmeg and herbal depth. Mint and peppercorns brighten the profile. The finish is sweet and spicy, with a vanilla fudge backdrop, clove and a long-lingering rye note.
