Lagavulin 12 Year Old Special Releases 2022 is a single malt Scotch whisky from Islay, bottled at cask strength as part of Diageo's annual Special Releases series under the name "The Flames of the Phoenix". This is the 21st edition of Lagavulin 12 Year Old within the Diageo Special Releases. This year's release stands out on two counts: the blending team selected exceptionally smoky casks of whisky – they measure phenol levels at every cask fill, so they can pick out particularly peaty batches – and then added whisky matured in virgin oak to the vatting, which brings additional layers of spice.
Unlike the standard 16 Year Old, this bottling forgoes any sherry cask influence in favour of the distillery character alone. The whisky matured in a combination of refill American oak casks that had previously held peated whisky, and virgin American oak. The virgin oak maturation rings out with a spiciness that builds upon the distillery's classic smoky character. The whisky is bottled at cask strength and without chill filtration, at 57.3%.
The nose is dominated by peat and salt. Damp peat smoke, humus-rich soil, seaweed and baked apples, with building tarry notes of creosote, decaying leaves and woody spice in the background; classic Lapsang Souchong tea tones combine with smoked fish and smoked leather. The producer describes the aroma as dry, with immediate, powerful smokiness – far more pronounced than usual for Lagavulin – with charcoal and fragrant peat to the fore, and a clean, fresh backdrop suggesting sea air and mineral tones.
