Blair Athol 12 Year Old Flora & Fauna is a Highland single malt from the distillery in Pitlochry, bottled at 43% ABV as part of Diageo's Flora & Fauna range. The Flora & Fauna series was introduced by Diageo (then United Distillers) in the 1990s, showcasing whiskies from lesser-known distilleries whose spirits usually go into blends or independent bottlings. Originally unnamed, the series earned the "Flora & Fauna" moniker thanks to author Michael Jackson – a nod to the drawings of animals and plants on the labels. In the case of Blair Athol, the label features an otter.

Blair Athol was founded in 1798 by John Stewart and Robert Robertson; it is one of the oldest Scottish distilleries and one of only seven working distilleries established in the 18th century. It is located in the town of Pitlochry in the central Highlands, next door to the Edradour distillery, and was originally named Aldour after the nearby Allt Dour burn. Blair Athol is a blender's whisky: 95% of production goes into the Bell's blend, whose visitor centre operates at the distillery. This makes single malt bottlings from this distillery a rarity.

The whisky matures for 12 years in sherry and bourbon casks. This is a 43% ABV bottling, chill-filtered and with added colouring, giving a dark, amber hue.

Sherry dominates the aroma. The nose is led by pronounced notes of sherry and maderised fruit: raisins, figs, dates, forest fruits and plums. There are also honey, vanilla, a sweet syrupy quality, and in the background damp oak, a touch of mint, aniseed and liquorice. On the palate the spirit is full and thick. The palate opens with a distinct but friendly note of tobacco, followed by slightly spicy oak and semi-sweet sherry, chocolate, toffee, vanilla and liquorice. The dram has a character of its own, with earthy notes, tobacco and wood smoke; the sherry influence is obvious both on the nose and on the palate, with dried apricots and orange peel, all rounded off by a herbal streak and a menthol trace lingering into the finish.

Blair Athol is best served in a traditional whisky glass, neat or with a splash of water to better capture its sweetness.
