Oban 10 Year Old is a single malt Scotch whisky from the Oban distillery in the western Highlands, released as part of the Diageo Special Releases 2022 collection under the name "The Celestial Blaze". It is one of eight releases in the Special Releases 2022 collection, and each whisky in the series was selected by Master Blender Dr Craig Wilson and bottled at cask strength. The 2022 edition carried the theme Elusive Expressions, in which mythical creatures were depicted in artwork by illustrators Ken Taylor and Kevin Tong.
The Oban distillery is one of the oldest and smallest in Scotland. Brothers John and Hugh Stevenson, who moved to the port town of Oban in north-western Scotland, initially worked building and repairing boats, and in the 1790s established a brewery in the town, which they converted into a distillery in 1794.
The whisky first matured in refill casks and new American oak casks, and was then given a secondary maturation in sherry casks and Amontillado-seasoned casks. It is bottled at its natural cask strength of 57.1%. The colour is pale, ethereal gold.
On the palate the whisky is gentle, without any prickle, and the initially faint aromatic notes gradually become more pronounced, marked by maritime accents of salt crystals, edible seaweed and fresh, ozonic sea air. As the senses adjust, a very delicate smokiness emerges with subtle notes of light oil and a hint of lemon. The creamy texture introduces a flavour rich in sweet accents of plum stewed in wine, balanced by lively salt and spice, closing with a note of chilli pepper. The finish is fairly long and surprisingly peppery, leaving a smooth memory of chilli in a maritime aftertaste. A drop of water softens the flavour, taming the spiciness without upsetting the overall balance.
